Great Britain – embossed duty stamps
1694–1840
Embossed duty stamps cut from the legal documents they were fixed to, each shown front and back: the front carries the duty and the die letter, the back the cypher label that covered the tin staple. No stamp catalogue numbers them, so they are numbered here R1 onwards, in order of their dies. The dies are catalogued in Barber's The Impressed Duty Stamps of Great Britain (1981), which is not available online, so the die dates are the collector's notes and are marked as such. What could be checked – the design, the value where it is legible, and the cypher label with its plate position and recut marks – was checked against the sources given with each story. No value bands.
