1858 Newspaper Revenue Stamp
About this issue
Besides postage, the Austrian monarchy levied a stamp duty on newspapers from 1789 (the Zeitungsstempelgebühr). From March 1853 revenue stamps bearing the arms were stuck on foreign newspapers; in Lombardy-Venetia they paid an additional tax on foreign papers. In 1858–1859 a set of three values was issued – 1 kreuzer black, 2 kreuzer red and 4 kreuzer rose-red – in kreuzer rather than soldi. The duty was abolished only at the end of 1899.
