About this issue

With the change from forint to korona (1 korona = 100 fillér) a new series appeared on 1 January 1900: the fillér values with the mythical Turul bird over the Holy Crown of St Stephen, the korona values with a portrait of Franz Joseph. The Turul went on being printed, in changing colours and watermarks, until 1916.

About this issue

The 2-fillér newspaper stamp of the korona currency shows the combined Hungarian arms under the crown with laurel branches; it was designed by Rudolf Boross. To speed up newspaper delivery, publishers were now allowed to cancel the stamps themselves before posting – to prevent fraud the cancel had to include the date – and papers such as Budapesti Hírlap and Pesti Hírlap had the cancellation printed onto whole sheets at the printing works. Like nearly all Hungarian newspaper stamps it was issued imperforate.
